LopeBase vs Metabase
Metabase is open source business intelligence. You point it at a database or warehouse, then ask questions with a visual query builder or SQL, and pin the answers to dashboards. It is a strong choice when your questions are about your own rows. LopeBase answers a different question: how is each product I run doing today? It reads Stripe, Search Console, your analytics tool, and your uptime checks directly, and it never connects to your database at all.
Side by side
| Topic | Metabase | LopeBase |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Business intelligence over a database or warehouse. | An ops console over the tools each product already uses. |
| How you ask | A visual query builder, a SQL editor, or its AI, Metabot. | The screens are built. Pick a product, or let an agent ask over MCP. |
| Data sources | 18 officially supported databases, from PostgreSQL to Snowflake, plus community drivers when you self-host. | Connectors for Stripe, Polar, Search Console, GA4, PostHog, Bing, Sentry, and more. |
| SaaS tools like Stripe or GA4 | Sync their data into a database or warehouse first, for example with Airbyte or Fivetran. | Read directly from each tool's API with a read-only key or Connect with Google. |
| Your database | Connected, so you can query any table. | Never connected. Your app shares chosen numbers through the LopeBase Adapter. |
| Hosting | Self-host the open source version, or use Metabase's cloud. | Hosted by us. Nothing to run. |
| Uptime and SEO | Not what it is for. | Uptime every 15 minutes, a site audit, rank tracking, and backlinks. |
| Customer-facing charts | Embedding is a core use, with unlimited embedding on Pro. | Not offered, apart from a public status page. |
| Best when | You have data in SQL and people who want to explore it. | You run several products and want each one's health without writing queries. |

The real difference is where the data lives
Metabase works on data that is already in SQL. Its data sources page, checked October 2026, lists PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, ClickHouse, MongoDB, and others. For a SaaS tool such as Stripe or HubSpot, its FAQ says to sync the tool's data into a database or warehouse first, using an ETL tool like Airbyte or Fivetran or the tool's own export, and then connect Metabase to that. Its integrations catalog has a guide per tool. The Google Analytics guide, for example, starts from GA4 rollups or the BigQuery export.
That model is powerful. Once everything sits in a warehouse, you can join Stripe charges to your own users table and ask anything. It also means a pipeline to set up and pay for, and a schema to understand before the first chart.
LopeBase skips the warehouse. Each connector reads its tool's API on a schedule: MRR and past-due payments from Stripe, clicks and positions from Search Console, visitors and key events from GA4. The numbers land on screens that already know what they mean. The trade is depth: you cannot join a Stripe invoice to a row in your own database inside LopeBase.
For your own app, LopeBase uses the LopeBase Adapter, a small package you mount at /api/lopebase. You declare which records, numbers, and services it may share, such as signups, active users, and paying customers counted in your own database. Every request is signed, and fields you did not list are dropped before anything leaves your app.
How the pricing compares
Metabase's pricing page, checked October 2026, lists an Open Source edition that is free with unlimited users, which you host yourself. Starter is $100 a month, or $90 a month billed yearly, for the first 5 users, then $6 per extra user a month. Pro is $575 a month, or $517.50 billed yearly, for the first 10 users, then $12 per extra user, and adds embedding, row and column permissions, SSO, and white labeling. Enterprise starts at $20,000 a year. AI use, transforms, and storage have usage fees past the included amounts, or you can bring your own AI key.
The open source edition is a real option for a technical founder with a server to spare. Remember to count the ETL tool, the warehouse, and the time to keep the pipeline healthy.
LopeBase counts products, not seats. Free for one product. Studio is $29 a month for 3 products, Portfolio $99 for 10, and Agency $299 with no limit. Operators are included in each plan, and there is no pipeline to pay for.
Where each one is stronger
Where Metabase is stronger
- Any question about your rowsWhich accounts used a feature last month, how a cohort retains, what a plan change did. If it is in SQL, you can ask it.
- No-code for the whole teamThe visual query builder lets people explore without writing SQL, with a SQL editor when they need it.
- Embedded analyticsCharts and self-serve reporting inside your own SaaS app, for your customers.
- Open source and self-hostedRun it on your own servers for free, with unlimited users.
- Subscriptions and alertsDashboard subscriptions and alerts that keep the team up to date without opening Metabase.
Where LopeBase is stronger
- No pipelineConnect Stripe with a read-only key and Search Console with one click. No warehouse, no sync jobs.
- Your database stays closedLopeBase never holds database credentials. The adapter shares only what you declare.
- Many products, one OverviewTotals across products, then a row each, with what needs attention worked out.
- Search, uptime, and errorsSEO checks, uptime every 15 minutes, Sentry errors, and failing builds, none of which live in your database.
- Alerts already setA site down, payments past due, or tracking that stopped reaches you by email or push without writing a query.
Which one to pick
Pick Metabase if
Your important questions are about your own data, you have it in SQL or a warehouse, and you want people to explore it freely, or to show charts to your customers.
Pick LopeBase if
You run several products and want revenue, traffic, search, uptime, and errors for each one, read from the tools you already use, without building a pipeline or writing queries.
Start freePick Metabase when the answer depends on a join only you can write. Product analytics on your own tables, a finance view built from a warehouse, and customer-facing dashboards are all jobs it was made for, and LopeBase does not try to do them.
Pick LopeBase when the hard part is breadth, not depth. A founder with four products does not need a new query each morning. They need to know which product lost search clicks, which Stripe account has failed payments, and whether every site is up. Most of that lives outside the database anyway.
Using both
The two fit together well because they read different things. Keep Metabase on your production replica or warehouse for deep questions about one product. Use LopeBase for the daily view across all of them, plus the search, uptime, and error data that never reaches your database.
The one place they meet is your own numbers. If Metabase already counts signups for you, the adapter can share the same count, worked out in your own code, so the LopeBase Overview and the weekly email show it beside MRR and traffic. Neither tool needs to know about the other.
Getting set up
There is nothing to migrate, because LopeBase does not read your warehouse. Most of setup is connecting tools you already pay for.
- 01
Add a property for each product, or run
npx lopebasein a project folder and let your coding agent scan the stack. See npx lopebase. - 02
Connect Stripe with a restricted, read-only key. The key builder sets the right permissions.
- 03
Connect with Google for Search Console and GA4, and add PostHog or Plausible if a product uses them.
- 04
Optional: mount the adapter for your own users and signups. See the adapter guide.
Metabase questions that run on your own tables stay in Metabase. If one of them is a number you check every day, like signups, it is a good candidate to declare in the adapter so it shows up next to everything else.

Is LopeBase a Metabase alternative?
Only for one job: seeing how several SaaS products are doing. For open-ended questions about your own database, or charts embedded in your app, Metabase is the better tool.
Can LopeBase run SQL?
No. LopeBase does not connect to databases or warehouses. Your own numbers come through the LopeBase Adapter, which runs inside your app and shares only what you declare.
Do I need a data warehouse for LopeBase?
No. Each connector reads its tool's API directly, so there is no ETL step and nothing to host.
Can Metabase show Stripe MRR?
Metabase's integrations catalog has a Stripe guide for MRR, churn, and failed payments. Its data sources FAQ says a SaaS tool's data must first be synced into a database or warehouse.
Can an AI agent read LopeBase like Metabot reads Metabase?
Yes, over the MCP server. An agent can read the same health, revenue, search, and analytics numbers you see in the console, read-only.
